Let's talk about Ford EcoBoost

What’s The Ford EcoBoost?

While shopping around for a new Ford, you may have encountered vehicle specs that include the Ford EcoBoost engine. The Ford EcoBoost engine is a complex mixture of technologies - fuel injection, turbocharging, and twin independent variable camshaft timing. All of this comes together with lines of computer code to provide optimal performance with respectable fuel economy.

Why Is Ford EcoBoost Engine Special?

Most gas-powered Ford models have a variation of the Ford EcoBoost engine. Very few Ford trucks, cars, or SUVs do not have the EcoBoost. For example, the 2020 Ford Mustang Shelby 500 comes with a 5.2L Supercharged V-8 Engine specially designed for the limited-edition vehicle.

The EcoBoost engine stands out from others because it is made of lightweight, coated aluminum. The special coating makes the engine more efficient because it reduces friction. Less friction improves fuel economy and reduces emissions, making the engine more eco-friendly when compared to others. When driving a car like the Shelby Mustang, fuel economy is not a concern, so Ford did not use an EcoBoost under the hood.

A 2020 Mustang with a 2.3L Ford EcoBoost engine with a six-speed manual gets an EPA-estimated 21 MPG city and 31 MPG highway. The 2020 Shelby GT 350 without an EcoBoost engine gets an EPA-estimated 14 MPG city and 21 MPG highway. It is easy to see how the EcoBoost affects fuel economy.

Ford EcoBoost Components

The Ford EcoBoost engine includes three essential components that work seamlessly to give trucks, cars, and SUVs more power and efficiency.

Twin Independent Variable Camshaft Timing

This part of the engine adjusts the timing of the intake and exhaust valves while the engine is operating. Opening and closing these valves maximizes torque and power when needed so that fuel consumption is minimized.

Turbocharger

To increase power, the exhaust activates a turbine that compresses fresh air into combustion chambers. The pressure creates the turbocharge that creates a surge of energy to improve the output per liter. The turbocharger reduces exhaust, thus making it more eco-friendly than others.

Direct Fuel Injection

To maximize fuel economy, the Ford EcoBoost measures a precise amount of fuel and sprays it as a mist into the combustion chamber. DFI reduces fuel consumption and maximizes power output.
